WHY is it called the world series and why do the NBA champs call themselves World Champs ?

Why is the Baseball championship series in the U.S. called WORLD series when only two countries (should the Blue Jays make it again one day) participate. There're other countries in which Baseball is popular and those countries constantly beat the U.S. at the Olympics and such !

The NBA champs call themselves World Champions. WHY ? The U.S. didn't even win a medal the last time they sent their Dream team to the Olympics. Other countries (Argentina, Greece, Russia...) often kick their buts, yet here we go : WOLRD CHAMPS.

Not arrogant or self centered. Not even ignorant. Lets teach YOU a little history.

When the MLB (Major League Baseball) and NBA (National Basketball Association) started, the United States was the only place where athletes in these two sports competed professionally. Years later, other countries started having professional teams as well, but these two leagues have not changed their name nor the name of their final series due to Trademark laws, etc.

Side note, back then (and even still today), the best athletes in the world competed in the United States leagues because the pay is so good. The best baseball player right now (Pujols) is not for the USA. The tallest person in the NBA (Ming) isn't from the USA either. Because of this, when the Olympics come, these athletes a lot of times choose to play for their home nation, even though they are in the NBA or MLB. So, when we call ourselves "world champs" and its a "world series", its not arrogance or self centered, or even ignorance, its fact.
It's just talk...marketing...nothing political or arrogant. The USA basketball team is no longer a "Dream Team". Many of the best don't play. The first was the Dream Team because of the amazing collection of all-time greats. Now, the USA team wouldn't even be a good NBA team.
Nice question. Like you said, baseball has Canada (blue Jays) yet Basketball has no other team from outside the country. Good luck, I am also curious..
Have you watched these events? Come on the World Series is just that where all the players come from all over to play it is the ultimate achievement. It's not just a title it is a world championship. Look at the list of players on any team and you will see why. Same goes for the NBA look at the rosters and you see that in National Basketball Association has more forgin players on it. Your right we did get our buts kicked the last time we sent a so called "Dream Team" to the Olympics. The reason that happen is we didnt send our best players. Thats the reason they can call them selfs WORLD CHAMPS is because we are the best and when we play our best we can beat the rest. Hands Downs.
